2018 was a year of cultural connections for Frontløberne, building bridges between generations and exploring Aarhus's cultural identity. At Kulturmødet Mors, the focus was on giving young people a voice in cultural policy debates, while Sydhavnsfestivalen introduced the South Harbor as a thriving cultural hub. Additionally, Frontløberne celebrated the 50th anniversary of the youth rebellion with a thought-provoking lecture series that connected past movements with today’s challenges and opportunities.

Kulturmødet Mors

August 23–25

At Kulturmødet Mors 2018, Frontløberne managed the program and execution of the youth-focused area, Kulturfjorden. Through debates, music, art, theater, and dance performances, the spotlight was placed on young people’s opportunities and contributions to cultural life.

For the first time, the event featured an ambitious debate program focused on youth. Discussions addressed themes such as Culture with(out) Margins, Young People Doing It Themselves!, and The Role of Youth in Future Democracies. Panels brought together directors from prominent cultural institutions like Gyldendal, Gladiator Publishing, and the National Gallery of Denmark with young cultural actors from Rampen Ebeltoft, Ungdomsrådet Thy, and USKIK. Together, they tackled challenges and solutions related to young people’s encounters with art and culture. The goal was to amplify youth voices and demonstrate the importance of including younger generations in cultural policy debates.

Beyond the debates, Kulturfjorden featured gender-political installation art by Swedish artist Snövidt Snow Hedstierna, the energetic dance performance Batterie Bou Bess from Senegal, the thought-provoking theater piece The Botanist, and a music program ranging from pop by DR’s Karrierekanon winners to wild dance rhythms presented by Det Turkise Telt.

Saturday saw a children’s party featuring Mek Pek’s Åh Abeshow, girls’ choirs, and flamenco dancing. Over three days, Frontløberne managed three stages and held 25 events, attracting more than 24,000 attendees, despite rain and wind, making it the most visited Kulturmøde to date.

Sydhavnens Festival

September 8

Together with Foreningen Sydhavnen, Frontløberne presented the Sydhavnsfestivalen on Saturday, September 8, 2018, from noon to 10 PM. The festival spanned the old slaughterhouse district, Værestederne, Kulbroen, Spain, and KH7 on Sydhavnsgade.

The South Harbor, a welcoming Aarhus oasis, became the setting for an ambitious and diverse festival. The program included behind-the-scenes tours of South Harbor’s studios, workspaces, businesses, and social venues. Guests enjoyed football tournaments, grassroots pétanque, art exhibitions, live music, and clothing exchanges. Local food vendors offered stone oven-baked calzones, classic Danish hot dogs, natural wines, and plenty of good vibes.

The music stage hosted performances by local talents across various genres. Meanwhile, the debate stage featured conversations with those for whom the South Harbor plays an essential role in daily life and those shaping its future. The festival also offered visitors a glimpse into the area’s colorful history and upcoming plans. With its focus on community, culture, and collaboration, the festival celebrated the creative potential of a united South Harbor.

Ungdomsoprøret
50 år

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the youth rebellion, Frontløberne hosted a three-part lecture series with support from FO-Aarhus.

The first event featured Uffe Elbæk (Alternativet) and Merete Ipsen (Women’s Museum), who shared their personal connections to the 1968 movement and its impact on their adult lives. Uffe Elbæk concluded with advice for young cultural creators, much like he had shared during his time leading Frontløberne. This advice was turned into a poster (see below!).

The second event asked how today’s youth are driving change. Panelists included Jens Malmkjær (DUF and The Scouts), Carl Andersen (Liberal Alliance Youth), and Martin Topf (Youth Red Cross), who debated how youth can organize for transformation and the challenges they feel compelled to address in today’s society.

The final event was a lively discussion featuring Olav Hesseldahl (Youth Bureau) and NIKOLINE (rapper and activist). Each presented their perspectives on the societal issues young people should tackle, from critiques of banking and political systems to hopes and dreams for positive change. With 40 young attendees from Aarhus and 100 from Testrup Højskole, the discussion sparked thoughts on activism and intergenerational collaboration.
