2020

2020 stands as a unique year, full of unpredictability with both highs and lows. It began with high activity in the house, continuing the energy from 2019. But on March 13, everything changed as COVID-19 lockdowns were announced. We had to temporarily close the project house and cancel or rethink all our events. This prompted the question: “How do we create culture in a time when restrictions and lockdowns have halted cultural life as we knew it?”
Frontløberne responded by hosting one of Denmark’s first online festivals, Transmission. The quieter periods were used to focus on learning and developing cultural project management formats for young creators. Despite the challenges, the project house thrived with growing activity, reaching over 205 active members by the end of the year.

Lift Off
In 2020, we launched Lift Off, a program designed to empower young creators to realize their ambitious cultural projects or elevate existing ones. Lift Off guided 50 young cultural creators across 11 project groups through four camps per half-year, led by project coach Kåre William and seven external mentors. They provided hands-on tools for project development, supplemented by individual coaching for each group.
The program fostered a strong community of engaged young changemakers in Aarhus. Each project group received funding of 10,000 DKK, leading to the realization of numerous events, exhibitions, and talks throughout 2020. Due to COVID-19, some projects and concepts are set to debut in 2021. Lift Off was supported by the Roskilde Festival Foundation.
Transmission
With support from the Tuborg Foundation and Music Legacy 2017, Frontløberne hosted Transmission, one of Denmark’s first online cultural festivals. Over three days, the festival featured 14 youth cultural acts, including concerts, poetry readings, live podcasts, film screenings, nature walks, and theater performances.
The festival attracted nearly 1,000 unique viewers per act and showcased an Instagram art gallery, which received an average of 459 visitors per artwork.
Show Off
In September, Frontløberne hosted SHOW OFF, its annual celebration of Aarhus’s creative grassroots. The day featured outdoor activities such as Chess & Chai by Soulitate Chaibar, an interactive art installation by Open the Kimono, and DJ performances. The evening’s lineup included live acts by Hun_Sagde and Kaizer.
Unge Ord
At Kulturmødet Mors 2020, Frontløberne adapted to the circumstances by creating Unge Ord, a week-long takeover of Kulturmødet’s Instagram. Thirty-two young artists and cultural actors shared short videos about their creative work during the pandemic.
Unge Ord proved that young artists are professional, sharp, reflective, and deserving of recognition, time to speak, and fair pay for their work.
ASU
The ASU program ran successfully in 2020. Over four half-year project cycles, high school students were trained in project management, democratic participation, and social engagement. The program is run in collaboration with Ungdomsbureauet and supported by the Tuborg Foundation.
Events in D3
Despite restrictions, D3 hosted 67 cultural events in 2020, including concerts, film screenings, poetry readings, and art exhibitions. Performances featured notable acts such as Jonas Eika, Asta-Olivia Nordenhof, Føl Som, and Aysay.
